Mayor's Corner

Mayor Sharon Harker

Mayor Sharon Harker - Elected Nov. 2021 &  Nov. 2023 - Term expires Dec. 2027

Originally from New York, I moved to Beaufort in 1983 after marrying Beaufort native Perry Harker in 1981.

We raised our three children in Beaufort, and I'm glad we did.

All our children attended Beaufort schools and were one of the first students to become Boys and Girls Club members when it first opened.

To get acquainted with my new town, I began volunteering and getting involved. I've served on the PTO and Advisory Board at all three schools. I became the president of the Carteret County League of Women Voters and was named "Woman of the Year."

I served on many local and state boards, including the Olde Beaufort Farmers Market advisory board, the North Carolina Coastal Federation executive board, and the North Carolina League of Municipalities Advancing Municipal Leaders advisory board.

I am also a proud member of the Beaufort Women's Club and Delta Kappa Gamma Society, honoring women educators.

I have worked as a respiratory therapist for over two decades, now I am an administrator at Carteret Health Care.

I successfully ran for Beaufort Commissioner in 2015 and 2019, and I enjoyed my years of service.

I ran successfully for Mayor in 2021 to continue to serve the citizens in a different capacity. I am honored and humbled to be the first African American to ever serve as Mayor.

As the Mayor, I advocate for affordable/workforce housing, economic development, environmental protection, and promoting diversity and inclusion so all voices are heard.
