Holiday SAFETY TIPS

FROM YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, each year fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 people, injure 1,650 more, and cause over $990 million in damage.

By following some simple precautions, you can have a safe and happy holiday.

Christmas Trees

Ø       When selecting a live tree, make sure the tree is fresh.  Old trees can be identified by bouncing the tree trunk on the ground and many of the needles fall off.

Ø       Do not place your tree close to a heat source as it will quickly dry the tree out.

Ø       Do not leave a live tree up for longer than two weeks.

Ø       Always keep the tree stand filled with water.

Ø       Visit http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/citizens/focus/ for a video clip of a dry tree vs. a moist tree fire.

 Holiday Lights

Ø       Inspect your lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in insulation, broke sockets and excessive wear and tear.

Ø       Do not overload electrical outlets.

Ø       Do not link more than three light strands together.

Ø      Use only UL listed extension cords and remember they are not for permanent use.

Candle Care

Ø       Avoid using lit candles, but if you do use them, make sure they are in stable holders where they can’t be knocked over.

Ø       Never leave the house with candles burning.

Ø       Never put lit candles on a tree.

 Other Safety Tips

Ø       Use only nonflammable or flame-retardant decorations.

Ø       Never put wrapping paper in a fireplace.

Ø       Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove..

Ø       Test your smoke alarms to make sure they are in good working condition.
